Seagate GoFlex Satelite 500GB Wireless
If like me you have exhausted your iPhone’s storage capacity, the thought of a Wi-Fi external drive to save my music, video and photos on is a very appealing idea indeed. Well Seagate seem to have recognised this gap in the market by announcing the GoFlex Satelite 500GB external drive. It contains a Wi-Fi module inside and as well as working with the Apple IOS, it will also connect with Andriod and any other devices that have Wi-Fi capability. It connects via 802.11n W-iFi and allows up to three devices to be connected at the same time. It also has a USB 3.0 for fast transfer with other devices that have a USB port.
With five hours battery life and being small enough to carry in your pocket, the GoFlex Satelite provides a convenient and workable solution to your truly portable needs. Apps are available for iPhone, iPad and Andriod to use the drive or you can also do so via your web browser.
Available now, this is one drive I am itching to get my hands on.
Seagate Expansion Drive
The first thing you notice on receiving the Seagate Expansion Drive 1TB is the attractive yellow and black box that I am pleased to say is fully recyclable. Contained in the package is an AC Adaptor with two-pin option, a USB cable with mini jack on the drive end and the drive itself.
Housed in a sleek shiny black casing with just the logo and one tiny light, the drive looks aesthetically pleasing and vaguely futuristic lying flat on four rubber feet. There is a brief quick start guide and a warranty booklet covering the limited two year cover that comes with the drive. The drive is PC only and is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and is genuinely plug and play. On attaching the AC adaptor and powering on the drive, connecting the USB cable to the computer starts the usual Windows “new hardware found” procedure. Selecting the search for software this time only option, the hardware is recognised and installed ready for use within thirty seconds. And that’s it! There are no programs to be installed and the drive appears as another letter in Windows Explorer, described as “Expansion Drive [G] just like your C drive. When double clicking the Expansion drive letter there is a set up icon that enables you to register the product so you get the latest information. Not registering does not affect your warranty so this is up to you and can be deferred as a reminder for 14 days.
In use the Seagate Expansions 1TB works very nicely as a no frills option for drag and drop copying and backing up of files and folders. Transfer speed is good as the drive offers 7200RPM performance and playback of mp3 and video files are seamless. In operation it is very quiet and unobtrusive and despite hours of use, surprisingly generates little in the way of heat. The huge 1TB capacity provides the freedom to accumulate and store a large number of files on your computer, safe in the knowledge that you have a backup option should anything go wrong with your internal drives. And although this is not a portable external hard drive, it is sufficiently small enough to move around the house should you want to connect it to your television or another computer.
In summary the Seagate Expansion external hard drive offers large storage capacity at an excellent price with a very respectable performance. If you are looking for a drive that is simple to use for routine copying and backing up of your files, then this one should be right near the top of your list.
